One of these things is not like the others
Thursday, November 17th, 2005

So, I’m looking at a bunch of Google services and I run across this – a link that shows site that Google determines are similar to yours.

I’m not sure of how this is figured, but….

Of the 31 sites listed:

Friends/buddies of mine:
http://www.lauralippman.com/
http://www.elaineviets.com/
http://www.susanmcbride.com/
http://www.mysterylovescompany.com/
http://www.marianne-macdonald.com/
http://www.jim-butcher.com/
http://www.marciatalley.com/
http://www.donnaandrews.com/
http://www.janburke.com/

My publisher’s primary site is listed, as is his blog.

All the rest seem to be writing related, except for the one that’s not like the others:

http://www.sidestreetshop.com/3s/

WTF?

Other than the fact that I’ve:
a) been in boats
b) bought DVDs (but not on boating)
and
c) bought/sold stuff on eBay
– I can’t bloody well make any logical leaps as to why this site was listed…even above sites that link to my site specifically…go figure.

If you want to look for yourself, in the Google search box, type in:
related:yourdomain

So in my case it was:
related:www.thelima.com

It’s a wild and wacky smallish world out there!

And yes, I am a big geek! (and I am spamming my f’list today)

Another Happy Happy Day
Thursday, November 17th, 2005

This time, the best birthday wishes go to thefourthvine – whose perserverance in reccing I envy, who’s lists are always unusual, and who never fails to amuse me.

May your day be simply the best!

Tonight, I will celebrate all these lovely f’list birthdays by going to see the boy wizard.

All I want for Xmas

Dear Santa, if I’m a Very Good Girl…

I’d really like one of these for Xmas. ::g:;

Follow me to the doctor

Because there is music
Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

I am in lurve.

Dar Williams was amazing. Her opening act, Girlyman, was awesome. Such wonderful energy.

Of course, it didn’t hurt that J got there early, so I was pretty much about 4′ from the stage. If it had been a Hard Core Logo concert, Joe would have spit on me. ::g::

Got a signed Girlyman CD (Remember Who I Am).

I <3 the Birchmere.

The food was meh.
The waitstaff was wonderful.
Sitting in front: priceless.

I need to keep doing things like this.

Oh, and this morning, after a bit of insomnia….I decided to be proactive and pay bills before I go into work. Except no direct deposit in my checking account. WTF?

I sent an urgent e-mail to my Director of Admin and cc’d my boss (the CEO). This happened once before, some screw up with the distro and bank wasn’t processing or some such. DAMN IT.

Not a happy chickwriter. However, I have every faith in my ability to get my pay today. Can you say “determined”? ::g::

ETA: Money appeared magically at 9:00 a.m. – which is not normal for my bank. Usually, it’s in at midnight:01 of payday. Still panning to follow up.

Music and madness

Tonight, I’m happy to be going to see Dar Williams with strange_selkie, darthrami, J and H. Happy happy thing! Craziness is: I have to re-install factory defaults on the PC desktop as I have sold it and the woman is coming tomorrow evening.

  • Tomorrow afternoon, I have my follow up doc appointment at 3:00.
  • Wednesday evening is the charity Crate & Barrel invite only event to benefit Doorways, a local women’s shelter.
  • Thursday (actually Friday) – Midnight tix to HP:GoA (yippee!!)
  • Friday (OMG, I have to WORK after going to a midnight show)
  • This weekend: sleep

My uncle in Cuba (my father’s brother and only remaining uncle) is traveling to U.S. in a few weeks. Mom is trying to coordinate plane tix for him from Miami to San Antonio. Then the rest of us (me, my sis & BIL) hope to meet up for an early family holiday gathering. We’re not sure if he’s staying one week, one month or what, but we’re doing our best to coordinate. I’ve not seen my uncle since I was a wee bit of a thing (age 2).

I’ve managed to re-arrange furniture at home. Next step is to de-clutter the closets and donate/get rid of books I’ll not read again, and other items that are simply taking up room.

Finally caught up on Desperate Housewives, with the exception of last night’s ep. Yippee!!

If you’re shopping for holidays, consider looking here first. Unique gifts provided by wonderful charitable organizations.

In honor of watching the Smallville pilot this weekend with darthrami, L and S, I decided to use my Wet!Clark icon. Totally renewed the SV love, because S1 & 2 Clark/Lex – so very very special.

Also squeeing with the imminent release of The Sentinel on DVD, even though there’s not a specific confirmation, I have all the confidence, since Richard is so popular now.

Publisher update:
– he called me on Saturday, left voice mail (I had no clue who it was, so didn’t answer). Check went out on 11/4 (no mention of priority); he e-mailed me a PDF of my royalty statement.
– Today’s mail has not yet arrived, so we’ll see if it’s here today.
I need to send a copy of the check and royalty statement to MWA to qualify for active voting status.

ETA: The check arrived with today’s mail! Faxed up to MWA. Unfortunately, next board mtg isn’t until 12/7, past time to get me on voting rolls. :( Oh well, next time.

Insomnia GIP
Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Because I couldn’t sleep, I got up and watched last night’s episode of House

And because it was the slashiest episode ever…I was inspired to make a new icon.

BTW, thanks to everyone for your comments on my publisher situation. As of yesterday, the check had not yet arrived.

If it’s not here in today’s mail, he is so hearing from me.

Spitting nails and taking names
Tuesday, November 8th, 2005

Okay – I promised myself I wouldn’t rant about my publisher until Wednesday – not until I saw for sure if he’d mailed out my royalty check (“Priority,” he said. “In the mail,” he said). But this just was the final straw.

This is a man, who by all accounts, is “too busy” and can’t keep up with projects and can’t keep up with demands on him from booksellers, authors, the printing house, Ingram’s, etc.

As per my question to him re: royalties:

Actually, I just took a quick glance and you’re absolutely right(it didn’t take much research to see I made a boneheaded mistake). I looked at all the wrong numbers (wrong months). I do this all manually, so human error does exist, one of the reasons I always tell folks to let me know if their numbers don’t add up with mine.

Uh, dude – I’m thinking that’s YOUR job to make sure the numbers work – b/c me, all *I* know is how many books there were at events, not what sold via online sales and such. I mean, really, am I totally off base here?

Today, I check his blog, because this is the *only* way I know that I made top 5 sales since debut. He never shares this in our author discussion group. (Not that he has to, but supposedly, he’s “in touch” with all of us; you know, more personal attention, yadda yadda – things I fell for when I signed the bloody contract – which btw, he’s never counter-signed.)

The part of his blog entry that totally made me run out of my office ranting:

So, this blog was supposed to be more than just our sales numbers but boy have I been busy lately. Just a lot of things all going on at the same time.

I’m an idiot. I’m participating in NaNoWriMo again this year. Trying to stay on deadline while running a publishing company is a bit daunting, but I’m enjoying the book I’m trying to write. I’m a little over 19,000 words right now. So, I’m ahead of the curve, but god forbid a few busy days pop up over the next few weeks.

I also just received my next manuscript back from my editor. So, I’m torn. I want to get this new manuscript written during this month, but my editor offered some very exciting ideas for the already finished manuscript…leaving me in a quandry…what child do you take care of?

Uh – Dude – how about paying attention to your primary business – your PUBLISHING house? You have dozens of authors that have been neglected and aren’t getting their royalty checks because you (admittedly) are a bonehead. Last time I checked, *we* are the ones making *your* money – because you’re certainly not making it at NaNoWriMo or in your writing.

I’m furious. I’m frustrated and just tired of beating a horse that’s long since crossed over the Styx. My agent hunt is on full time again and once I land an agent, I’m getting out of the remainder of the contract and moving on. I’d rather not have any more books with him, because I can’t trust him to pay me what’s due, nor to concentrate on making a success of the publishing house.

I never planned to make a fortune at this, nor even a living wage, but I expect to be treated like a professional.

As synchronicity would have it, NewN and I (that being my new employee) had lunch today and discussed films.

No one’s talking about Wilma
Monday, November 7th, 2005

Amazing how the media seems to be silent about the 3rd and just-as-devastating storm this year, Wilma. A dear friend of mine and fellow author states:

“Fort Lauderdale is still a mess, and four of my friends lost everything.

About half of the traffic lights are on. The rest is chaos. The streets are piled with dead trees limbs and debris in six foot high stacks, waiting for pickups and it’s hard to see around the corners.

Thank you all for your concern and your help…I know many of you are tapped out from donations to Katrina and the tsunami relief, but if you can spare a few dollars, please send them to the Wilma relief fund. Many of the elderly are hit hard here. People 80 and 90 years old have lost their homes. About 5000 homes in Fort Lauderdale will have to be condemned.

Also, please check your home insurance. Most of my friends were underinsured because they bought their homes before the current real estate boom. They don’t have enough insurance to cover their costs. Please make sure that yours is updated to cover the current apprised value of your property.”

It breaks my heart that after all the attention (and rightly so) given to Katrina and Rita, Wilma victims are all but being ignored.

My friend is one of the lucky ones – she and her husband are okay, even after days without power, but obviously, there are many more people in South Florida who are not.

May I ask you to spread the word? I’d really appreciate it.
