Making the Baby Jesus cry
Monday, April 11th, 2005

Today was a day of frustration and aggravation.

Some work stuff:
– 3 of our most senior developers are out (2 at a client meeting out of town; one on vacation) – what happens some weird ass server glitch. Thank goodness our IT Director and Network admin (bheerfan) were there.

Non-work stuff:
– I got my new RAM chip in for Blanche (the iBook) – splurged on 1GB chip. Excited – take it home, it’s the WRONG FREAKING CHIP! Checked my order online – correct chip. They put the wrong thing in the package.

– So, I decide to play the Netflix movie I got today – Lilies. The DVD is broken!! Cracked like a crack ‘ho.

Now, my freakin’ wireless connection cratered, so I had to dig out the extra network cable and connect Blanche to the router.

I give up. I’m going to crawl into bed and read something distracting.

Because some of us need a life…

…or at least need amusement.

Today’s pointless poll – a collaboration between yours truly and bheerfan.

Yes, I am working!!!

ETA: brooklinegirl, there’s a question about HANDS!!

Small worlds
Saturday, April 9th, 2005

It truly is a small world.

I’m watching this lovely romantic movie, Big Eden, about a New York artist, Henry Hart (played by Arye Gross). He’s living in New York, successfully, but alone. His grandfather has a stroke and Henry goes back to his small home town of Big Eden, Montana to take care of him.

It’s rather a complex, yet simple little love story, involving Henry and his unrequited love for his childhood friend, a straight man, who loves Henry in his own way. There is a second love interest, a Native American man, named Pike Dexter, played by an actor that was hauntingly familiar to me.

I *knew* Due South was the connection – had to be – but I couldn’t place him. Thank goodness for IMDB.

Here’s Eric Schweig, first seen by me in the DS Pilot as the Inuit hunter. Oddly enough, Eric is an Inuit from Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Heh.

And on a totally not-related but weird coincidence note, Arye Gross was in a movie just after Big Eden. The title: Burning Down the House.

Final unrelated note – I just spent the last 20 minutes on the phone with my boss, my lead developer, and bheerfan (who happens to be our network admin – because there is a client Web site problem. ARRRGH!!! J – the developer is at the airport, getting ready to get on a plane to Charlotte. He and another developer are meeting with said client on Monday re: a new project. My boss is in a car on the way home from her accountant. Sigh. If none of us had mobile phones, I wouldn’t know about this until Monday.

Sometimes technology is not so much of a good thing.

Music memeage
Friday, April 8th, 2005

Because although I can resist memeage, how I can resist the Q (qe2)?

01. Total volume of music files on my computer:

Okay – on the desktop at home – about 15 GB.
On the iBook: 8.76 GB
On my work laptop: about 10GB

02. The last CD I bought was:
Physical CD? Great Big Sea: Turn
iTunes CD? Rufus Wainwright: Want One, Want Two (okay, so I bought 2 at once).

03. The last song I listened to before writing this was:
The Fisherman’s Lament by Great Big Sea

05. Five songs I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:
(These are in no particular order)

a) Angel from Montgomery – Bonnie Raitt and John Coltrane version
– this song always conjures up my posse from college – a group of women that helped me through a lot of hell.

b) Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen
– because it celebrates real women

c) Into the Mystic by Van Morrison
– I’ve always loved this mental visuals of this

d) Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic

e) Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright
– as some of you may know, I’ve recently become obsessed with this song. I’m not sure why it haunts me. Makes me want to write angsty RayK/Fraser – with a happy/hopeful ending.

06. Five albums I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:
(These are in no particular order)

a) War Child – Jethro Tull
- my first intro to JT, and I know all the songs by heart. It was one of the first records I owned and played constantly in high school.

b) Hymns of the 49th Parallel – k.d. lang
- the best of Canadian music by k.d. – how can you go wrong?

c) Songbird – Eva Cassidy
- this album was my first intro to Eva. She was a gorgeous singer.

d) Nick of Time – Bonnie Raitt
- It’s quintessential Bonnie and I adore her.

e) The Best of Warren Zevon – Warren Zevon
– because, it’s the best.

07. Which 5 people are you passing this baton to, and why?

a) bheerfan – because she introduced me to some cool music

b) viggofest – because I’d love to hear what she likes

c) allaboutm_e – because my cousin has wonderful eclectic taste

d) ardent_muses – I’d love to know more about you.

e) bluster – ditto

Woof and GIP

Okay, just a tad bit freakish – since I was born in the year of the Dog.

Which totem animal are you?

I’m an adult now
Wednesday, April 6th, 2005

I have joined the ranks of responsible adulthood.

Have I bought a house? No way – not at DC area prices.

Have I bought an SUV? No way – silly cars unless you have to haul stuff.

Have I given birth or otherwise acquired a child? – BITE your tongue!!

I have hired a cleaning service. YIPPEEEEEEE!!!

Although I live in a small studio apartment, I’ve managed to overcome the mom-induced guilt. It’s OKAY to need help.

The service was recc’d by a co-worker – reasonably priced and very personable. They come on Tuesday to do the initial cleaning. Then, they’ll be coming in twice a month.

Oh yeah…they also do laundry.

Musical Frustrations
Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

So, does anyone on my flist have a copy of Rufus Wainwright’s cover of Hallelujah? ETA: song found!!!

Silly me, I was willing to BUY the damned song, but it’s not available on iTunes, nor is the only freakin’ CD it’s on – Songs from the movie Shrek – not the soundtrack, but the CD with the pop songs. You’d think that someone in my office would have the CD, but noooooo.

Anyhow, if any of you lovely lovely people have that CD and would be so kind as to rip me an MP3 of that song, I’d love you forever…oh yeah, wait, I already love you guys!! Oh well, I’ll be indebted to you.

If no one has it, I’ll spring for the entire CD, but damn. I only want the one tune. (How quickly we are spoiled!!)

This from a woman who was in utter shock the first day she walked into the local record store and there were only CDs, no more LPs. ::g::

The times, they most definitely are a-changin’

ETA: _aerye_ is a GODDESS!!! And theamusedone a GOD!!!!

Mission accomplished and I am in music heaven.

Home
Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

I am home.

Woke today with tiredness that is only attributable to my period. Beledibabe and I both were exhausted, so we skedaddled early.

Got to say goodbye to bluster and ardent_muses, and caught but a brief hello/goodbye and a couple of hugs from darthrami as we exited.

Had much fun and a truly wonderful time – both seeing old friends and making new ones. ::waves to reetchick and ilexa::

Some of the highlights:

* Dinner Friday night at Vinny’s Cafe with the multitudes of Due South fans. I got to sit and chat with tobyfan for a long time!

* The lovely DS party hosted by the OT3, all lovely in their 60s U.N.C.L.E. gal gear.

* The fabulous Due South charity raffle. Bethbethbeth is a true guilt-inducing pimp goddess when it comes to selling tickets. ::g:: I came home with wonderful schwag, including a copy of Suspicious River , a Labatt’s Canadian Police Curling pin from a 1991 championship, a signed copy of Love and Carnage CD, and the piece de resistance, a copy of The Last Guardian a non-fic book about the RCMP. I think it was the bound Mountie on the front that convined reetchick to come to the dark side. ::g::

* Pros partying in justacat‘s suite and watching lovely vids!

* Shopping in the dealer’s room and picking up some fun magnets and bookmarks.

It was a blast, but now I’m totally worn out.

Many many hugs to my one-night roomies, the aforementioned ticket pimp and the_starfish. And to the wonderful shayheyred, rustler, qe2 _aerye_, akite, the DS party girls and well, hell – all of you freaks and fabulous women (and theamusedone!!).

I’m off to take a much-needed nap, then catch up on RL stuff.

Ciao to everyone – hope your respective trips home are as low-key as mine was.

Hugs and smooches!!!

ETA: egads, I must have been more tired than I thought. I’ve corrected the half-sentence and spelling error. If there are any more, please ignore and forgive the tired me.
